Muktinath is a famous pilgrimage spot for both Hindus and Buddhists from around the world. Hindus believe that it is a sacred site, and to wash in the waters here guarantees salvation after death. The Hindu god, Bramha, is thought to have lit the eternal flames that still burn at Muktinath. To the Buddhists, it is a place that the great sage Guru Rinpochhe (Padmasambava) meditated and to all, it is the source of fossilized ammonites, known locally as saligrams, which are found all along the upper reaches of the Kaligandaki valley.

There are a number of choice, short treks in the foothills to the North of Pokhara. Most of these deviations will visit Ghorepani and Ghandruk. Ghorepani is just below the famed vantage point of Poonhill, one of the best spots to see the views of central Nepal Himalayan panorama.

A trek up into the Langtang valley has to be one of the most rewarding of the short treks available in Nepal. The east west running valley is the site of some spectacular alpine scenery as well as being a great place to meet distinctive people. Traditional culture and ways dominate this area and Tibetan roots are still very strong. This area borders with Tibet and can bring you closer to traditional Tibetan culutre than you would believe...

We follow a rugged trail with dramatic views; to the west Himal Chuli (7893m), Manaslu (8156mm) and Ganesh Himal (7406m). On a clear day, even the Annapurna range can be seen rising up behind and to the north across the valley. We pass a few huts in the high picture of Laurebina, cross a small ridge and have our first views of the holy lakes. There are about a dozen lakes in the Gosainkunda Basin, the main three being Saraswatikunda, Bhairabkunda, and Gosainkunda. According to legend, Shiva created Gosainkunda when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having swallowed a poison that threatened to destroy the world.

A relatively low altitude trek, the Helambu circuit is one of the most well located because it is close to Kathmandu. While most of the trek is at low altitude below 3000m, the high point at Tharepati La pass is 3600m and can experience snow even during the main trekking seasons.
